Oxidative Stress

Oxidative stress is the imbalance between the production of free radicals and the ability of the body to counteract or detoxify their harmful effects by neutralizing them with antioxidants. Understanding oxidative stress is the #1 factor I work with my clients on to help minimize its harmful effects with diet. As a middle age athlete, I found I could personally no longer mask the effects of oxidative stress and simply “push through” hard exercise. Oxidative stress can limit your athletic potential, your longevity and your quality of life.

Oxidative stress can occur from a lack of fruits and vegetables, poor overall diet, mental stress, alcohol, physical stress and hard exercise, and pollutants in the air. Oxidative stress is the root of all disease. Its effects are far reaching and have been shown to be triggers for diseases of the brain (Alzheimer’s Disease, MS, ALS, OCD, ADHD, migraines, and cancer) and immune system disorders (auto-immune disorders, lupus, chronic inflammation, colds and flu). Oxidative stress has also been linked to diabetes, chronic fatigue, arthritis, poor cardiovascular health, lung disease, and poor eye health. In other words, oxidative stress can negatively affect every system in our bodies.

As I have reached middle-age and I see the illnesses of friends and people in my community and their family members, I have personally made it a life mission to educate as many people as I can personally to help prevent these often unnecessary conditions and diseases by targeting the #1 factor and cause of these disorders….our diets.

A diet rich in fruits and vegetables (not multi-vitamins which have been shown to do more harm than good in many studies) has been shown to neutralize the effects of oxidative stress. Our dietary recommendations focus on clean, whole foods and eating a minimum of 7-13 servings of fruits and vegetables daily (16-18 for athletes).
